Bob Sternfels

Senior Partner at McKinsey San Francisco Office

Bob Sternfels is a senior partner at McKinsey & Company based in San Francisco. He leads McKinsey’s client capabilities globally which includes our Industry practices, our functional areas, and our innovation priorities. Bob focuses on connecting McKinsey clients with the best, most relevant expertise in the Firm and on accelerating innovations across our Firm. Bob is a member of the firm’s Shareholders Council (our board of directors) and our Executive Team. Previously, Bob led the Operations Practice in the Americas and the global Private Equity Practice. He has been with McKinsey for 24 years and has worked with colleagues in nearly every office around the world including a six year stint living in Johannesburg. Given his deep operations background, Bob has particular expertise in the area of radical performance breakout-sessionss and as Bob also oversees McKinsey’s digital and analytics offerings, he is increasingly focused on how clients can leverage technology to reinvent their organizations. Bob serves on the board of QuestBridge, on the advisory board of USA Water Polo and as a Trustee of the Rhodes Trust. He is also an enthusiastic private pilot. He lives in Mill Valley, California, with his wife Ashley, daughter Samantha, and sons Thomas and Andrew. Bob graduated with honors from Stanford University, where he earned a BA with honors in economics and history. He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University and earned an MA in politics, philosophy, and economics.
